Denzel Washington carries Flight on his shoulders from start to finish. After a thrilling opening half hour, the movie slows down and focuses on Denzel’s flawed pilot who has done the impossible: saved almost everyone on board his plane. Flight loses altitude when it focuses on Denzel’s relationship with a younger recovering addict…and soars as we witness a man spiraling out of control much like the plane at the beginning. Much of Flight has a “been there, done that” feeling but it is the two time Oscar winner we can’t take our eyes off of. A good but not great movie anchored by one of the best performances of the year. Want a sure thing to bet on? Denzel’s name will be read when the Academy announces the Best Actor nominees.
